Parents view: "Every child, like Sam, deserves access to a mentor who can provide guidance, support, and the belief that transformation is possible."
At 360 Mentoring, we understand the pivotal role that mentoring plays in the lives of young individuals facing challenges. This case study highlights the remarkable journey of Sam, who faced significant obstacles in his educational and personal development but found new hope and success through our mentoring program at 360 Mentoring.
Background:
Sam's story began at the age of 7 when he was in Year 3. He had experienced 15 exclusions from mainstream school due to severe behavioural issues, displaying violent and aggressive behaviour toward adults. Concerned about his well-being, his parent sought support from CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). However, with no school willing to accept him, Sam ended up in a temporary placement at a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school.
Identifying the Need for Mentoring:
During his time in this temporary provision, Sam started to show signs of growth and emotional regulation, but the root causes of his challenges remained unidentified. It was later discovered that Sam had ADHD and social and emotional anxiety. An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) specified the need for a mentor. This decision marked a turning point in Sam's life, allowing him to transition back into mainstream education with the support he required.
Success in Mainstream School:
In Year 5 and 6, Sam thrived with mentor support and successfully reintegrated into mainstream education. The plan was to continue this progress into secondary school. However, during the transition to Year 7, it was determined that he no longer needed support, and his funding was withdrawn.
Challenges During the Pandemic:
Unfortunately, the challenges for Sam did not end there. The COVID-19 pandemic hit, and Sam, who was in Year 7 at the time, struggled with the concept of "Social Bubbles." He missed most of Year 8, Year 9, and a significant portion of Year 10, causing immense concern for his educational future.
The Return of Mentor Support:
Recognising the critical role of mentor support, Sam's parents were determined to reinstate it. After a rigorous process, suitably matched mentors were found through 360 Mentoring in March 2023. Sam was reluctant to leave his home, but mentors Adam and Josh embarked on the journey with unwavering dedication.

Transformation through Mentoring:
Within a few weeks of daily mentoring sessions, focusing on nurturing, building confidence, and embracing Sam's interests (such as cars and music), a remarkable transformation took place. Sam not only began attending school daily but also engaged actively in academic work. Despite the gap in his learning, he is now deemed capable of achieving his GCSEs in maths and English. Sam's goal of starting college early became a reality when he successfully interviewed for a Level 1 Mechanics programme, surpassing all expectations. He has also secured a weekend job in a garage, allowing him to immerse himself in his passion for cars.
The Impact of Mentor Support:
Without mentor support, Sam's incredible journey would not have been possible. It is a testament to the simplicity and effectiveness of mentoring. Mums view is “Every child, like Sam, deserves access to a mentor who can provide guidance, support, and the belief that transformation is possible.”
Sam's story highlights the power of mentoring in unlocking potential, instilling confidence, and enabling young individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. At 360 Mentoring, we remain dedicated to making this transformative impact accessible to all children and young adults.
